Japanese Store Manager Talks Performance of Nintendo Switch, PS4 Pro, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2

The start of December marks a critical moment to the Japanese gaming industry, since it’s the start of Holiday earnings season (which many predict the “Holiday sales struggle”), which goes all of the way through Christmas and in the first week of January.

An interesting window in the situation is offered by the manager of Games Ma-Ya, a game store near the Kasai station in the Edogawa district of Tokyo. Each single day, she supplies a small report about what happened at the store on her own blog.

Yesterday was the release day of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and if it had been slow in the morning and day (That’s definitely ordinary in Japan to a weekday), but things began moving in the day, with several male customers coming into the store seeking to purchase the game together using a new Switch console. The limited edition was already sold out using pre-orders, along with the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Pro-Controller was also common.

About the Switch itself, a new shipment was received by the store, and at the day’s close, it still had both colors in stock. The version had reservations, but the neon blue and red version enjoyed strong sales and immediately overtook it.

Interestingly, we hear that the manager met Monster Hunter World Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto at that the PlayStation Awards service, and she mentions that in the present time the game has become easily the most pre-ordered at the shop. However, she’s looking forward to it.

Today’s narrative marks the first Saturday of the Holiday period, and as anticipated the store was crowded with households in the morning. The supervisor describes them using a picture of family parties where parents and children discuss to choose which colour of this console and then games to buy. At times, they even’re even accompanied by grandfathers and grandmothers. This’s a common sight for her when people purchase Nintendo products, and through the children’s words she catches a glimpse of the circumstances of the family sometimes. That’s a moment that she looks forward to at every year’s conclusion and at the start of the second.

On the other hand, the PS4 Pro is popular with adults only, and there are many clients who say that they’re purchasing it to prepare for Monster Hunter Word at January.
