During Take-Two’s fiscal conference call for the financial year ended on March 31st, ” Chief Executive Officer Strauss Zelnick has been requested to talk about the firm’s prognosis in relation to a potential release of a new PlayStation console from Sony at 2020.
Zelnick said that if he doesn’t have any ability to comment on the plans of another business (in this case Sony Interactive Entertainment), he considers Take-Two has navigated transitions in console cycles fairly well so far, plus they’re very proud of that.
Historically, through a transition period, the challenges can be quite important, however Take-Two was able to get around them by having its labels produce “the maximum quality properties which defy proper behavior in console transition intervals. ”
Zelnick recalls that during the transition between both PS3 and PS4 there was a lot of noise in the market about the challenges for older games. On the other hand, Take-two wasn’t challenged in the least by this. Since the caliber of their catalog was so large, they did “ exceedingly.
He continued by mentioning having a “restricted amount of the highest quality releases” and using games which tend to perform well as catalog titles (IE: they market well a while after discharge), transition periods create less danger for Take-Two. Because of the simple fact that the games itself are extremely higher quality, as new platforms have been introduced, they could continue to perform.
As an example, Grand Theft Auto V was developed for the preceding generation, and yet “it is still the standard bearer for this generation,” which according to Zelnick is “extraordinary” and something that the publisher is “thankful to Rockstar for and exceptionally pleased with. ”
Zelnick went on to say that in case of the release of new platforms, the publisher will determine what to support based on its own views of potential success, but in addition, he discovered that the PC platform has become “a very, very significant” part of the company does, driven by digital supply. Thist true for console titles ten years back, but it’s the case now.
Zelnick concluded by describing the industry isn’t platform-agnostic yet, but he believes that it’s likely to occur later on.
“Does that mean that the company is flattening out, what becomes open, and we neglect’t care what brand is about the box? Not at least. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of generations.
